As Marilyn Monroe
THE COSTUME
If you are going to dress up as Marilyn Monroe in Seven Year Itch, you should take the time to thread a small-gauge wire through the hem of your dress and then tie some fishing line to your middle fingers and then to the wire. When you raise your arms some, the dress flares out almost as if you were standing over a grate. It's like magic. You will spend the whole evening lifting this dress and never tire of it.
THE IDEA
This photo is from the late 1990s, and I wore this dress to the Boybutante Ball, but it was first worn in the late 1970s by Connie Wilson. She and her sister Julie McLeod made this dress with some cheap fabric. They say it was simple to make; I wouldn't know since I don't actually sew. It was their idea to put in the wire and to do the fishing line. Julie's daughter wore this dress a few years back, so it has gotten quite a bit of use here in Athens, GA.
A FEW NOTES
You have to wear opaque, white, old-fashioned brief-style underwear that you do not mind showing to strangers. Also, Marilyn wore sexy shoes, and I did not because I am practical and was going to be walking a lot. My hair was a bit too long here for this costume. Either curl your hair tightly or get a wig. Make sure you get that beauty mark on your face, arch your eyebrows, get some big earrings, and wear some red lipstick. Oh, and have fun!
